SEPTEMBER 21:

While we remain rivals on the football field, Dear UNL looks to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for guidance as we navigate the RED ZONE.

#WhileWeWait for central administrators at University of Nebraska-Lincoln to meet and exceed minimum Title IX guidelines, we will highlight some of the notable efforts by the University of Illinois to empower survivors of sexual misconduct:

- Clear information leading visitors to internal and external emergency and reporting resources are organized by need
- Plain and simple language supporting independent decision-making is visible throughout the website
- Survivor confidentiality and individual choice is recognized; Visitors have the ability to make an "emergency exit" at any time and online reporting is available

SEPTEMBER 28:

It’s ESPN's College GameDay at University of Nebraska-Lincoln where Nebraska and Ohiostate are facing off against each other at Memorial Stadium! OSU and Nebraska have more in common than football rivalries. Both Ohio State and Nebraska have faced public concerns about their responses to survivors of sexual violence on their campuses.

However, in the fight to improve responses to sexual assault and services for survivors, Ohio State has come out on top. In response to criticism, concerns, and outcry from students and staff, OSU has:
- Hired an independent, third-party to conduct a review of relevant offices and procedures
- Strengthened its relationship with local rape-crisis center to provide 24-hour services to survivors
- Removed staff who have not followed policy, not responded with trauma-informed practices, or have misrepresented their credentials from their positions
- Created an easy to navigate, clear website outlining Title IX policies, procedures, and resources

Administration at Nebraska has yet to take any of these steps, despite Dear UNL’s demands to do so. We continue to ask Nebraska to listen to survivors to improve responses and resources.

OCTOBER 12:

The Huskers are facing the Gophers this Gameday! Looking closer at our opponents, the U of M is yards ahead of UNL when it comes to sexual violence resources…
1. An easy to follow Quick HELP Guide.
2. The Aurora Center offers a 24-Hour Helpline, Academic and Legal Aid, Medical Support, and Sexual Violence Support Groups.
3. A Victim’s Right Policy that clearly lays out all of a victim’s options.
4. The UMPD’s Investigative Approach’s empowering statements like, “Our officers will not prejudge you, and you will not be blamed for what occurred. We will treat you and your case with courtesy, sensitivity, dignity, understanding and professionalism.”
5. An affirmative consent policy.
Unfortunately, the UNL Title IX and CARE center’s lack of a resourceful website, full services with 24-hour victim advocates, affirmative consent, and history of unprofessional investigative approaches do not score a touchdown.

Dear UNL is kicking off game-day by highlighting a few of Indiana University's strategies to build trust and increase access to services:

- Knowing what to do or where to go is a significant burden survivors face following sexual sexual assault. The Indiana University community can access a DETAILED brochure with resources, information, and procedures in support of independent decision-making. (http://stopsexualviolence.iu.edu/doc/IUB%20Seuxal%20Misconduct%20Brochure.pdf)

- If a survivor chooses to report, a variation of methods, ranging from confidential online reporting (including an emergency exit button) to lists of independent, community crisis intervention organizations, are available on IU's website .

- Survivors are encouraged to seek help however they feel best serves them. Providing lists of on-campus responsible employees and confidential resources is a critical primary step in creating a safe campus culture.(http://stopsexualviolence.iu.edu/employee/index.html)

Indiana University understands the overwhelming feelings of uncertainty following sexual assault. Empowering victims of sexual assault by creating accessible literature and connecting the IU campus community to a variation of services builds a culture of trust and allows survivors to reclaim their identity while remaining on IU's campus.
